Counting down to ABC Challenge

By Sam Hargreaves

Our Youth Advisory Council has been working hard planning ABC (Anything But Cars) Challenge.

In January, the group put together a Neighbour grant proposal for the Calgary Foundation to  support ABC challenge. They were fortunate enough to receive that grant which allows us to provide schools with funding and prizes for participating. We have received a bike maintenance stand from BikeBike  to be awarded to the school with highest participation.

We are busy working with our partners at the Bike Shed, at the Greater Forest Lawn Senior Center to find a great refurbished bike for each school. It will be dropped off with posters before the event.

Student creativity on display

The students have created amazing Instagram posts showcasing what ABC Challenge is and the goals we are hoping to achieve – building community, empowering youth and celebratin  g Spring. We created letters to send out to businesses seeking funding or prizes for schools who participate. The team has also started working on water bottle designs, a banner for the winning school, and other designs for more prizes.

Usually our youth advisory council generally only meets once a month however, with our ABC challenge coming up April 28 to May 2 we have been meeting every two weeks. The students have all been great advocates at their schools, getting them to sign up for ABC challenge. To date we have 11 schools signed up and we are hoping to get more before our April 12th Deadline. A teacher or representative can fill in this form.

If you would like to learn more about the students and which schools, they represent we showcase them on our website. Each student has such a unique story, and it is always nice to get their perspective on active travel and how youth can be encouraged to give it a try.

Next step, will be to get students to create accounts on Commuter Challenge to log their travel during the week of the Challenge.

Schools signed up to date:

This image is an All Saint's school logo. There is a capitalized letter A in black and capitalized letter S in blue. The background colours are beige, taupe, black and blue. Below, there is writing that says "Once a Legend..." in black and "Always a Legend" in blue.
